All
my kittens are fully vaccinated (against flu and enteritis), they are
wormed and insured for 6 weeks with Pet Plan. They also leave with a
goodie pack containing a food sample, food dish, toys and vaccination
card. Should two kittens leave together the overall price would be
reduced by £50. I also offer this reduction to people who already have
one of my cats/kittens.
My kitten prices are purely a reflection of the expenditure each litter requires. I
have my own stud boy who is housed in his own stud quarters which
require heating and lighting. Obviously he too is fed the best to keep
him in tip top condition.
Once my queen is successfully pregnant
I then have increased food bills to ensure she is given the most
nutritious diet whilst she is carrying her precious load. When the
kittens finally arrive, I always have the possibility of having to pay
out a substantial vet bill in the event of a complication such as
a caesarean section. Then I have another increase in food and litter bills to ensure their health and development. All my cats are all fed on the best quality food.
As the kittens get older there is the cost of vaccinating, registering and worming each kitten. Compare
these costs then to a pedigree puppy, who usually leaves at 8 weeks of
age at a much higher price and not having had any vaccinations and not
neutered or spayed, or even house trained.
I also show some of
my Devon's, I feel as a breeder that this is an important part of my
hobby as I strive to constantly learn about the breed and improve my
lines. The average show fee for just one cat is around £35, add onto
that any travel costs and it is an expensive day out.
I adhere to the GCCF (Governing Council of The Cat Fancy) codes of practice when homing kittens. The GCCF don't advise kittens be allowed to leave for new homes until 13 weeks of age. My boys are ready to leave at 13 weeks old. My
female kittens are usually neutered at 14 weeks of age, and then ready
to leave at 15 weeks as long as there have been no problems after their
operation. Sometimes the girls may have to stay a little longer if
they have had a lick at their spay wound. I will only let any kitten
leave when I am satisfied that they are fully fit and healthy, this is
in the kittens best interest and also the potential new owners. Early
neutering kittens before they leave is a relatively new practice in
this country, yet something which pedigree breeders of all breeds are
now doing. I have only received positive feedback on my decision to
early neuter my kittens.
How do you go about reserving a kitten? I
would usually ask to meet all prospective kitten owners before any firm
decisions are made, an exception may be made if you live a considerable
distance away, but this is only at our discretion. The first visits
would be allowed when the kittens are around 8 weeks of age. I will
require a £50 deposit to reserve one of my kittens after mutual
agreement on all parts following this. This deposit is NON REFUNDABLE so please think carefully about it.
